On Earth as It is in Heaven 4
As a church family, our hope is for our lives to be an active prayer for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Our goal, as a church family, is for all we do to contribute to fulfilling this hope. Each week we plan to explore some aspect of our life and ministry in the light of this goal.
We are called to:
Submit our lives to Christ and become members of His Body, the Church
God wants us to be members of His family.
The Bible is clear that following Christ is not just a matter of believing–it also includes belonging. The Christian life is not a solo act. We are meant to live in relationship with each other. The First Epistle of Peter 1:3 says, “He has given us the privilege of being born again, so that we are now members of God’s own family.” God has given us the church as a spiritual family for our own benefit. Ephesians 2:19 says, “You are members of God’s very own family…and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.”
Grow in Christ through the habits of a disciple
God wants us to be models of his character.
This is the goal of discipleship. The basic habits of a disciple are prayer, scripture, quiet time, giving, serving. God wants every believer to grow up to become like Christ in character. Becoming like Christ is the biblical definition of “spiritual maturity.”
Jesus has established a pattern for us to follow. “To this you were called because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps” (1 Peter 2:21). In 1 Timothy 4:12, Paul gives us several specific areas in which we are to model the character of Christ: “Set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, in purity.” Notice that maturity is not measured by one’s learning but by one’s lifestyle. It is possible to be well versed in the Bible and still be immature.
