On Earth as It is in Heaven, Advent 4: PEACE
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” ~John 14:27
As a youngen’, I spent a lot of time hanging out at the homes of my friends. I would ride my bike into town, seven miles, since I lived way out in the sticks. When I reached my friends’ homes, I often stayed the night since it was a pretty long ride with a lot of large hills—unlike our beloved Midland. It was also much safer to spend the night since it would often get dark early in Northern Michigan—too dark to ride my bike back home.
Some of my friend’s homes were places of peace, rest, and calm. Others were rife with tension and conflict. It’s amazing what a kid can learn from spending a night or two at a friend’s home.
Jesus Christ came to give us a peace, a peace unlike any the world can give–an eternal peace that rests in Christ, His promises, and His kingdom; and not in the things of this world. As Christians, do others see us as people of Christ’s peace?
Especially during this Advent and Christmas, when we host family and friends in our homes, will they walk away from their visit refreshed by the peace of the Lord, or feeling the tension and stress that we carry. Give all your cares and frustrations to Jesus Christ this Advent and Christmas and be a beacon of peace to everyone around you.
